CHUNG-ANG UNIVERSITY OF SEOUL, KOREA

Chung-Ang University, established in 1918, has overcome the nation’s adversities and has taken on a leadership role cultivate the intellectuals of Korea with the educational ideal of Die in honor, Live for Truth. The university now has a duty to keep our nation growing by developing technology and promoting new ideas, to use these technologies and ideas in keeping our nation environmentally clean, and to developing more cooperation with each other for world peace. Therefore, we must do our best to be a creative university coping with the difficulties of an unknown future while maintaining an awareness of our history to be an innovative university respecting individual abilities and personalities and to be a university promoting the standard of life within a community.

The Department of Theatre was established in 1959 as the first four-year theatre program in Korea and has been leading the field of theatre education ever since. Based on the brilliant tradition, excellent faculty, and best educational environments that have served to cultivate numerous talented people in theatre, film, broadcasting, etc., we are proud to say that our department is the best in Korea.

According to 2003’s <The Evaluation Survey of Theatre Departments in Higher Education>, conducted every five years by Joongang Daily, CAU’s Department of Theatre was ranked top in all of its five categories-faculty, educational conditions, finance/facilities, students/alumni, & reputation.

CAU’s Department of Theatre that has been leading the field as mentioned above is doing its best to train the talent who would become important figures in the world of performing arts. By defining the identity of Korean theatre as well as accepting various trends in the rapidly changing Age of Information, our training is focused on students’ acquiring new forms of performance and theatre aesthetics. In addition, the department trains students as theatrical artists with creativity that is suitable for the Age of Culture of the 21st century by offering them a kind of systemic education that balances theory-theatrical theories of the East/West-and practice. Through this, we will nurture experts, in every theatrical discipline, who would lead the world of performing arts and, ultimately, contributes to the growth of performing arts in Korea.

By the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment in 2008, the Department of Theatre will leap up as an international theatre education institute by exchanging educational systems, academic scholarship, performances, and students with other leading theatre departments in the world. Ultimately, the department is going to be extended into the (Graduate) School of Performing Arts and Film-the first in Korea-in order to systematically train the talent who would lead the field of theatre.
